About

Île Sans Fil is a non-profit organization created in 2003, whose mission is to provide free wireless internet access in public places to the people of Montreal.

What we do

We concentrate on the installation of wireless access points in publicly-accessible locations like libraries, bistros, cafés, parks, community centres, and so on. Our users can thus access the internet at any of our more than 260 hotspots sprinkled across the Island.

We provide the installation and administration of the hotspots free of charge. We depend upon the goodwill of the owners of the venues to share their internet connection with their customers (as well as with other community members within range).

Our Philosophy

We believe that it is possible to apply today’s communications technology to break down the isolation that citizens feel, at the local level.

We are both a technology development group and a group of community activists. Île Sans Fil has brought together a team of professionals and students from diverse disciplines, who share a passion for what the internet makes possible. Together, we are working toward an optimal way of sharing the internet’s possibilities with all Montréalers.

Île Sans Fil embodies the best of the community spirit of the World-WideWeb!
